A CA(SA) in your corner, not on your payroll.

A private finance practice led by a chartered accountant. Since 2014 it has run, and repaired, the finance function inside South African businesses.

Kenny van der Merwe, CA(SA), founder of KWV Professional and Financial Services

The practice

I started KWV in 2014 after a career in corporate finance, most of it at CFO level. The businesses I wanted to work with could not justify a full-time finance director but needed one all the same.

When I walk into a business I read the books first, then the bank, then SARS. Within a few weeks the owner knows where the cash goes, what the exposure is, and which decisions cannot wait. Then we fix the function: the bookkeeping, the controls, the reporting to the board, the people.

Some clients keep me on as their finance function. Some bring me in for one problem, a forensic investigation or a restructure, and I leave when it is solved. Either way it is me doing the work and me you speak to.

Where a client needs something I do not do myself, insurance, funding, vehicles or legal support, I make the introduction to someone I trust and stay in the room.

What he handles

Three disciplines, shown as the jobs a client recognises. Open one for the full list.

The network

These are not departments of KWV. They are introductions to partners the practice has worked with, made when a client needs them, with Kenny staying involved.

Insurance

Short-term and specialist lines including professional indemnity, cyber, directors' and officers' and commercial crime. Long-term risk, retirement and investment.

Funding

Bridging finance, short-term loans and asset finance.

Vehicles

New and used vehicles, and FAW trucks.

Legal support

Road Accident Fund claims, commercial and labour matters.

How an engagement works

  1. Retained finance function

Monthly. Books, SARS, management accounts and board reporting, run as your finance department.

  2. Defined project

A scoped piece of work with an end: a forensic investigation, a restructure, an audit, a system implementation.

  3. Interim CFO or FM

Senior cover for a vacancy, a transaction or a difficult period, for as long as it is needed.

  4. Non-executive board seat

Independent financial oversight and governance at board and exco level.

Why a practice, not a firm

Senior expertise without corporate overhead
You get CFO-level judgement and pay for the judgement, not the building around it.
Hands-on
The person you brief is the person who does the work. Nothing is handed down to a junior you have never met.
Governance and integrity
A chartered accountant bound by SAICA's code, who will tell you what the numbers say rather than what you hoped.
No job too big or small
A late VAT return and a board restructure get the same attention, because both can sink a business.
Long-term partnership
Most relationships run for years. The practice grows with the client rather than billing and moving on.
A wide network
When you need insurance, funding, vehicles or a lawyer, you get a trusted introduction rather than a cold search.
